Constitution

KSU SLA Constitution and By-Laws

The following Constitution and By-Laws fulfill a requirement by the Kent State Graduate Student Senate and Office of Campus Life to present the principles governing the Kent State Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association.  While these articles strive to present an accurate portrait of the KSU SLA Chapter, they are certainly subject to revision wherever appropriate.


Article I: Name and Objectives

Section 1. The name of this organization, a student organization affiliated with the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, shall be the KSU Chapter, Special Libraries Association, hereinafter, referred to as KSU SLA.

Section 2. The objectives of this KSU SLA shall be to provide an association of students at KSU School of Library and Information Science having a professional, scientific, or technical interest in library and information science, especially as this is applied in the recording, retrieval, and dissemination of knowledge and information in areas such as the physical, biological, technical, and social sciences and the humanities; and to promote and improve the communication, dissemination, and use of such information and knowledge for the benefit of libraries or other educational organizations.  No part of the property, assets, profits, or net income shall inure to the benefit of any director, officer, or member or to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.

Section 3. As a not-for-profit corporation, which is exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, no part of the property, assets, or net income of the KSU SLA shall inure to the benefit of any director, officer, member, or other private person except that the KSU SLA shall be authorized to pay for expenses incurred and to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the objectives set forth in Article I, Section 2 of these By-laws.


Article II: Membership

Section 1. Membership in the KSU SLA shall consist of students enrolled at Kent State University´s School of Library and Information Science program or its affiliated campus programs.  Member status shall be granted to any student who is actively enrolled in at least one 3-credit course or workshop at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science and who desires to be a member of KSU SLA.

Section 2. Membership in the KSU SLA requires no dues or fees.   Members are encouraged, though not required, to become members of the Special Libraries Association.   In the event of KSU SLA sponsored activities or events, members are responsible for any expenses related to transportation to and from the event unless specified.

Section 3. A Member shall have the right to participate in all KSU SLA activities, and to hold any open KSU SLA office or appointive position.   A non-member shall also have the right to participate in events without paying a fee.


Article III: Officers

Section 1. The President shall be the chief executive officer of the KSU SLA and shall have general supervision and control over its affairs; shall preside at all meetings of the KSU SLA; and shall provide leadership in the organization of activities and events.

Section 2. The Treasurer shall report to the members on the financial status of the KSU SLA and shall be responsible for the organization´s checking account.

Section 3. The Secretary shall provide a written record of meetings in the form of minutes and other special reports as needed.

Section 4. The Programming Coordinator shall assist in the coordination of events and act as liaison with external organizations involved in KSU SLA activities.

Section 5. The Webmaster shall be responsible for updating the content and design of the organization´s Web site, which is accessed from KSU´s School of Library Information and Science Web site.

Section 6. The terms of office of President, Programming Coordinator, Treasurer, Secretary, and Webmaster shall be one year from time of election or appointment.  This shall normally occur in the months of either June, July or August, or as necessary in the event any officer is unable to fulfill duties of the office.

Section 7. The establishment of officers, their titles and responsibilities shall be at the discretion of the membership, but shall consist at least of a President, Programming Coordinator, Treasurer, Webmaster, and Secretary.  Each of the officers shall be on the organization´s Web site.

Section 8. The officers shall be student members of the Special Libraries Association.


Article IV: Faculty Advisor

Section 1. There shall be a Faculty Advisor for the KSU SLA, appointed by SLIS.

Section 2. The Faculty Advisor shall oversee all events and activities of the KSU SLA to ensure they align with the objectives and goals of the SLA.


Article V: KSU SLA Meetings

Section 1. Meetings shall be held at the discretion of the officers and/or advisor on an ad hoc basis, but at a minimum of two per semester.   There shall be one mandatory meeting held in September as an Open House to acquaint interested students in the objectives of the SLA and KSU SLA, and provide the opportunity to become members in both the student KSU SLA and the national SLA.

Section 2. Notices of meetings shall be posted in advance of the meeting date and time within the School of Library & Information Science.   These shall be posted on bulletin boards, the school´s electronic listserv, or in other places readily available to members.  All members shall have the right to participate in and contribute to posted meetings.

Section 3. Officer meetings shall be held on an as-needed basis for planning purposes, and shall be reported at general meetings.   Officer meetings shall not restrict any member desiring to participate from attending.
