NORASIST New Archives - November 1999

ASIS Annual Meeting 1999

Knowledge: Creation, Organization and Use
Washington, D.C. October 31-November 4, 1999

More than 1,000 people attended, an excellent turnout for a society with around 3,000 members. Among the attendees were at least nine from the local chapter: Huijie Chen; Ruth Fenske, NORASIS Membership Promoter; Tom Froehlich; Steve Gallant, NORASIS Chair-Elect; Scott Lapinski; Erica Lilly, NORASIS Assembly Representative; Penny O'Connor, NORASIS Secretary; Ed Sawyer, NORASIS Chapter Chair; and Marcia Lei Zeng, NORASIS past chair. Tom was communication officer for SIG HFIS, and put together sessions on History and Foundations of Information Science. He received loud acclaim for his paper at SIG-CON. Scott delivered a paper on The "Inappropriate," policies and politics of unrestricted Web access. Erica was the organizer of a session on designing interfaces for users with special needs. Marcia delivered a paper on metadata structure for a digitized historical fashion collection. Marcia was recognized for her service as chapter chair, Erica was recognized for SIG contributions, Ruth and Penny for their roles as Chapter advisors, and Erica and Penny for service as listowners of ASIS-L, the ASIS listserv.

On Sunday at noon several of us attended the excellent leadership development session: Using technology to leverage mentoring.

Many of the technical sessions dealt with knowledge management. Plenary speaker Tom Sudman of Digital AV has posted his KM slides at www.asis.org.

Sessions on XML and metadata (including Marcia's) were packed to overflowing. Intellectual property and intellectual freedom were not only substance for technical sessions; they reverberated through presentations on database protection, electronic publishing, and information retrieval.

The capstone plenary was on Intellectual Property Rights and the Emerging Information Infrastructure, reporting the difficult work of the Computer Science and Telecommunication Board. See the recently released report at: www.cstb.org. Read more about 1999 ASIS Annual Meeting in an upcoming issue of the ASIS Bulletin.
