Business Meeting, Thursday, January 31, 2002
Held at Parma Height Branch Library, Cuyahoga County Public Library

Chapter Chair Steven Gallant called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Steve requested the report of the Nomination Committee, consisting of Steve Gallant, Marcia Zeng and Penny O'Connor. Penny O'Connor reported one nomination for Chapter Chair-Elect: Ruth Fenske. Steve asked for additional nominations from the floor. In the absence of additional nominations, Jean Piety moved that nominations be closed. Barbara Parkinson seconded. Penny O'Connor moved that Ruth be elected by acclamation. Jean Piety seconded. The vote was a unanimous "aye."

Membership chair Richard Brhel reported that the chapter has 42 members, with one new member since July. Since 2001 there have been 13 nonrenewals.

Treasurer Barbara Parkinson reported a balance in the treasury of $1,134.20. The Science Fair winner for 2001 has not cashed her $50 prize check.

Steve Gallant announced that the DigiScript ASIST 2001 proceedings have been posted at www.asis.org, so subscribers can now watch and listen. Those who selected proceedings in CD-ROM format will receive 20 discs. Jean Piety announced that writer Oliver Sacks will speak at Cleveland Public Library on March 10, 2002.

Jean Piety moved to adjourn. Penny O'Connor seconded.

The meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. so that eight chapter members and 16 guests could hear a presentation by Marcia Lei Zeng on her database project: A Comprehensive Information Resource in Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Toward an International Collaboration.

Toward an International Collaboration

This presentation introduces the research and progress that I have been involved in with Columbia University during the past several years. In 1997 we proposed a comprehensive information resource for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to fill the considerable needs of a broad audience for worldwide access to CAM information. We organized two workshops of representatives of nine international databases that contain significant information on various aspects of alternative medicine (Bangalore, India in 1998, and in Seoul, Korea in 1999). The Prototype-I named "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Digital Library (CAMed)" illustrates the anticipated structure, content and functionality of the comprehensive resource. Prototype-II demonstrates the possibilities of searching across the databases. Since 2000, we also started to develop a general conceptual framework to cover concepts and terminology used for information retrieval in the field of CAM. Prototype-I and II will be presented in this meeting. Issues and challenges we encounter in dealing with CAM systems, concepts and terminologies will also be summarized.
