This
presentation introduces the research and progress that I have been
involved in with Columbia University during the past several years.
In 1997 we proposed a comprehensive information resource for complementary
and alternative medicine (CAM) to fill the considerable needs of
a broad audience for worldwide access to CAM information. We organized
two workshops of representatives of nine international databases
that contain significant information on various aspects of alternative
medicine (Bangalore, India in 1998, and in Seoul, Korea in 1999).
The Prototype-I named "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Digital
Library (CAMed)" illustrates the anticipated structure, content
and functionality of the comprehensive resource. Prototype-II demonstrates
the possibilities of searching across the databases. Since 2000,
we also started to develop a general conceptual framework to cover
concepts and terminology used for information retrieval in the field
of CAM. Prototype-I and II will be presented in this meeting. Issues
and challenges we encounter in dealing with CAM systems, concepts
and terminologies will also be summarized.
