The
overall purpose of this organization is threefold. ALA/ALSSO should
maintain a strong working relationship with the ALA,
fulfill a leadership role within the SLIS community, and serve as
a clearinghouse for ideas and issues between its members and the
larger world of Library
and Information Science. More specifically, this organization seeks
to:
Encourage and facilitate participation in the ALA, working to promote
scholarly achievement and professional awareness among its members.
1.
Acquaint members with goals and objectives of the ALA and ALSSO.
2. Assist
members to better plan their studies and career strategies by
providing significant information on ALA resources in the area
of
publication, scholarship, conferences and promotional material.
3.
Provide an avenue for communication between members and the ALA.
4.
Provide members of the student chapter with official representation
to
the ALA and elsewhere.
Serve as an advocate for the needs of SLIS student
1.
Provide an avenue for communication between SLIS students and faculty
including
the Director.
2.
Work with faculty and the Director on issues of general concern
to SLIS
students.
Work to increase awareness of issues and trends in Library and Information
Science.
1.
Provide data on timely issues and concerns while acting as a
local forum
for the exchange of ideas that benefit the entire SLIS community.
2.
Maintain contact with the Alumni and Friends Council, or other
SLIS alumni
groups organized in the future, whose goal is to promote networking,
information sharing, or act as a sounding board in identifying
real world
trends and competencies important for current students.
3. Actively
promote involvement in professional activities beyond the classroom
