M.L.I.S./MBA Admission Requirements

The Master of Library and Information Science and Master of Business Administration (M.L.I.S.- M.B.A.) multiple degree program is designed for managers of large libraries and information centers.

The M.L.I.S. degree is the recognized degree for professional librarians. The M.B.A. degree is currently recognized as the graduate degree of choice for many seeking professional management roles in both the profit and non-profit sector.

Admission Requirements

Students must be accepted by both the School of Library and Information Science and the Graduate School of Management. However, only one graduate school application needs to be submitted. Each program makes an independent admission decision.

Admission decisions are based on a combination of factors. Some of these are listed below.

  • undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or another master's degree with a graduate GPA of 3.0; letters of recommendation;
  • proficiency in algebra & calculus (or the ability to pass pre-M.B.A. workshops to be brought to proficiency);
  • oral and written communication skills;
  • computer applications;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE); or
  • Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

69-70 credit hours are required for the dual degree. There are 33-34 credit hours in business (normally 60 hours) and 25 hours in Library and Information Science (normally 36 hours) and 12 credit hours in which either M.L.I.S. or M.B.A. courses can be taken. Students taking two courses per semester (an average of 6 credit hours), including summers, can complete the requirements for the M.L.I.S./M.B.A. degree in as little as 4 years.
