Welcome to Kent State University's
School of Library and Information Science

Individually and collectively, Kent State University's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) puts excellence in action every day - through first-class research, inspired teaching and meaningful outreach across Ohio and beyond.  In the process, we have put Kent State on the national map as a leader in children's librarianship,  knowledge management and information literacy.

SLIS at Kent State University is the only American Library Association accredited Masters in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree program in the state of Ohio. An M.L.I.S. degree is the basic requirement for professional employment in most libraries and information centers.

Home to 600 graduate students, a world renowned faculty, state-of-the-art technology, and a national reputation for outstanding scholarship, SLIS at Kent State University is your key to a challenging career in the library and information science profession.

OVERVIEW

  • The School’s 12-12-12 Distance Learning Degree Program is designed to provide a well-balanced program leading to an MLIS degree for students in Ohio who might not otherwise be able to travel to the Kent campus or the Columbus location.
  • Courses will be offered by interactive, two-way video conferencing  from external locations.  Students in the remote sites view the instructor on a video screen or monitor, but all students will participate in class discussions by the use of microphones.
  • The 12-12-12 program offers 12 credits of core courses the first year of the 2 year cycle and 12 credits of electives in the second year of the 2 year cycle.
  • Beginning in Fall 2007 the School will be adding a fifth core course to the MLIS degree which will be offered as a web-based class beginning in Summer 2008.
  • Classes will be scheduled in the evenings on 2 days of the week for the entire 2 years.  The length of courses will vary from as few as seven weeks to sixteen weeks, but each course typically meets only one night per week.  At this time, we do not offer classes at the 12-12-12 sites during the summer semester.
  • Of the remaining 9 credit hours (MLIS is a 36 credit hour degree), 3 hours must be completed as a Culminating Experience.  The remaining 6 hours can be completed in a variety of ways, including taking courses in Kent or Columbus, taking another web-based class, completing a practicum and/or an individual investigation, transferring up to 6 graduate credit hours from another university, and/or taking up to 4 credit hours of workshops.
  • Students admitted to the 12-12-12 program are expected to take both courses offered at their location in the first fall semester to ensure that they will have a spot in all subsequent classes offered at their location.  There is no guarantee that a second cycle of courses will begin again at the same 12-12-12 site after the initial two-year cycle is over.
  • The 12-12-12 program is not designed for students wanting to specialize in a specific area of librarianship.  Specialized courses (see guidesheets) will only be offered at the Kent campus or our Columbus location.
  • New 12-12-12 students cannot begin the program at a 12-12-12 site beginning its 2nd year of the 2 year cycle.
  • Students must have access to email and the Internet to participate in the 12-12-12 program.  It is highly recommended that students have high-speed Internet connectivity to enable them to effectively participate in course activities.   Access to the Internet is available in public and academic libraries.  No other technological skills are required.
  • Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) in regard to the 12-12-12 program.

NOTE:  Students attending the 12-12-12 sites from neighboring states will receive the resident tuition rates.
