There are several types of financial aid available for students in the School of Library and Information Science - graduate assistantships within the School, assistantships outside of the school, student loans, scholarships and on-campus employment.

The criteria utilized for awarding all SLIS-sponsored awards include: (1) a 3.25 grade point average or better for all collegiate work; (2) outstanding letters of recommendation; (3) evidence of scholarship and financial need as established by information submitted on the application form for scholarships administered by the School of Library and Information Science.

Following are types of financial aid available for students in the School of Library and Information Science:

  1. Graduate Assistantships administered by the School of Library and Information Science:

The SLIS has a limited number of graduate assistantships available each year on a competitive basis to full-time students.  A graduate assistantship provides full-time students with tuition remission and a stipend in exchange for 20 hours of work per week. The positions begin with the Fall semester. Students who wish to apply must submit the "graduate assistantship application" which is included in the online application or may be found in the application packet. This application should be submitted to the SLIS on or before April 30th and only the applications of students admitted by April 30th will be considered.  Students in the 12-12-12 Distance Learning Degree program are not eligible for Graduate Assistantships.

  2. Scholarships administered by the School of Library and Information Science:

Several scholarships are administered by SLIS and they are posted on our Scholarships and Assistantships page.  The scholarships that are available for the Fall and Spring semesters are generally posted in August.  Applications must be submitted to the SLIS on or before the deadline dates indicated on each scholarship application and only the applications of students enrolled in the MLIS program will be considered.

  3. Graduate Assistantships and Scholarships administered by agencies outside of the School of Library and Information Science:

Students can learn about graduate assistantship opportunities available in other departments and schools by requesting the Directory of Graduate Assistantships in Administrative Offices from the Division of Research and Graduate Studies

  4. Graduate Student Loans:

These are administered by the Kent State University Financial Aid Office and other agencies. Students interested in applying for a loan should contact the Kent State Student Financial Aid Office or call 330-672-2972

  5. Special Scholarships:

Many local and national scholarships are also available to students already enrolled in an M.L.I.S. program or to students who have recently been accepted. These scholarships are administered outside of KSU, and students submit their application directly to the sponsoring body. Students should check the SLIS student listerv and the scholarship bulletin board regularly for scholarship announcements.

  6. On-Campus Employment:

There are numerous student employment opportunities available both on and off campus each semester. Students frequently find jobs in Kent State University's Libraries and Media Services, working in areas such as reference, government documents, technical services, circulation, or periodical information, as well as in Kent State branch libraries.   Student employment is available in other departments on campus and may be found through Career Services.

Students are also encouraged to explore financial resources offered through the various professional organizations that can be found on the Awards and Scholars page or the Financial Aid Downloads pages.
