Indexing and Abstracting (I&A)

Course Description:

 Principles and methods of indexing and abstracting. Manual and computerized indexing processes for different kinds of indexes, including I&A databases, back-of-book indexes, website indexes, etc. Basic techniques of thesaurus construction. Theory and practice of indexing for specialized formats and subjects. Current issues in automatic indexing and abstracting.

Course Objectives:

1. to demonstrate the role of indexing and abstracting in subject access

2. to survey the range of indexing and abstracting methods available

3. to develop skills in indexing and abstracting in both manual and automated systems

4. to understand basic concepts and techniques of thesaurus construction

5. to gain experience in the design and evaluation of I&A systems/services for

specific formats and subjects

6. to acquaint experience in creating website indexes and publishing web-based products
